Asian Steak Bites & Potatoes Recipe in 30 Minutes!
This butter soy steak bites and potatoes recipe includes garlic butter and a soy-based sauce, with sautéed beef cubes and potatoes. It's ready in under 30 minutes and all cooked in just one pan. An easy weeknight dinner!

This Asian steak bites and potatoes dish is inspired by many steak bites recipes I've seen on Pinterest. I wanted to create my version with an Asian twist, and so here's the recipe :)!

If you haven't tried it, butter and soy sauce taste great together. Butter adds richness and delightful flavor, while soy sauce adds an umami kick to the meal. Together, they create a velvety savory sauce that elevates the taste of beef stir-fry dishes.

Beef and potatoes are always a winning combination. In this dish, I truly think the potatoes are the real stars since once softened, they soak up all the delicious flavors of the beef, butter, soy sauce, and aromatic elements.

This dish reminds me of my Vietnamese shaking beef (bò lúc lắc) recipe, which also uses cubed beef steak. However, this is much simpler and easier with fewer ingredients. I've made a short video below to show you how to cook it.

🛒 Ingredients

The main ingredients are:

  • 12 ounces of beef steak (I use ribeye),
  • 16 ounces of potatoes,
  • Garlic,
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter,
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of soy sauce (I use Kikkoman), and
  • Fresh thyme.

I prefer using Yukon Gold potatoes for this dish. They have enough waxiness to hold their shape and enough starchiness to become soft and absorb flavors when cooked. You can leave the skin on or peel them before cooking.

🍳 How to Cook Asian Steak Bites and Potatoes

To make this dish delicious, you'll need a heavy-bottomed pan like a cast iron skillet for properly searing the meat and potatoes. A well-made cast iron or stainless steel skillet will work perfectly for this recipe, unlike non-stick pans (except for those with a hard anodized coating that allows for searing). Depending on how much you're making and the size of your pan, you might need to work in batches. Overcrowding the pan with too much meat can prevent proper searing and even cooking.

This dish comes together quickly, so make sure you have everything prepared before starting to cook. I like my beef cubes to be medium-sized once cooked and my potatoes to be tender, so they need to be cooked separately.

1️⃣ The first step is to cook the potatoes. Depending on the power of your stovetop and the size of your potato chunks, this can take anywhere from 5-7 minutes.

2️⃣ After that, we quickly sear the beef, add butter, garlic, soy sauce, and potatoes, and sauté for a little while until all flavors meld together. Detailed step-by-step instructions are in the recipe card below. You can serve this dish with steamed vegetables (or a sesame dressing for this green salad) for a quick and satisfying weeknight dinner. Here's a more flavorful one-pot one-pan recipe for you:
